Tassie A-League Bid?

It was reported very quickly at the end of the news about 8am on Triple J this morning that "A Tasmanian property developer/investor has come forward and said that they are willing to put up the $2m to gain an A-League license"! Can it be, Tasmania in the A-League?! It seems that Townsville and NZ may now have some very steady competition! But can a Tassie A-League team compete with the Tassie Hawks?!

I must also add to that the news report was very breif and it was never stated whether the investor was to use the A-League license for a Tassie team. We can only dream ...

Yeah right!!!

wont happen, better off to go for a team in the vpl

Gees there is some negativity on here! If Central Coast and Townsville can do it why couldn't we?

I heard the news report too, but I didn't hear anything about a Tasmanian property investor.

I couldn't find any online references to the article, but I heard in another forum that someone saw a segment on ABC News on Tuesday night, of Martin Shaw (FFT CEO) looking for investors/sponsors for an A-League club.

Surprisingly there is nothing on the FFT site either.

Ah and I wouldn't consider it competition for NZ or Townsville, one of those is going to be decided today, the other may enter next year, and FFT is planning for a 2010 entry at the earliest.

And The Tassie Hawks? I don't think four games between April and September are going to affect a league that runs from September to February. AFL and A-League are no threat to each other at all.

yeah the codes may not clash, but what about the supporters chug? will a-league get as many supporters as AFL does?

Chuq said...

Well a huge number of Melbourne Victory supporters on their forum are dual (AFL/A-League) supporters. I guess it depends how open minded Tasmanians are ... Newcastle and Central Coast are averaging 10,000+ so it definitely isn't out of our reach.

fair enuf but wheres all the money going to cum from to pay players, also u have a squad of 23 so 23 players will have to move to tasmania

Chuq said...

Umm, the same place as other clubs - investors and sponsors?

23 people are going to have to move here! For a start, assuming that not a single Tasmanian will be in the squad is a bit pessimistic. And secondly - so what of people have to move?? Players who transfer between different clubs do that all the time??

It's looking to me that the only thing stopping it from happening is that if even the people reading a "Soccer in Tasmania" blog are trying to think of reasons it won't succeed, what hope would the general public have.

Anonymous said...

chug fair comments, but do you think anyone from tasmania is good enough to play a leauge

Anonymous said...

They may not be good enough to straight away play A-League, but i def think there are some players out there that have potential to be part of a squad. And of course players will have to move here, just like the do for the Tassie Tigers, Devils & Chargers! Fringe players from most A-League teams would move to a club that they know they are going to get first team action in ... for at the end of the day they want to play!

Anonymous said...

well said roy fringe players definatly would move here, wich tasmanians do we think might be able to play a leauge

Chuq said...

i guess we don't really know how Tasmanian players would match up against mainland players, because we haven't had the experience. Maybe FFT could put together a "Tasmanian All-Stars" team of locally based players to play friendlies against other A-League clubs.

y would an aleauge club want to play a tassie team when they can play alot better teams in other state leauges

Chuq said...

Why would Melbourne Knights want to play Glenorchy Knights (as they did a couple of weeks ago)?

Why would Sydney FC want to play NSWPL teams Wollongong Wolves and Blacktown City (as they have done in the last month)?

Non-rhetorical answer: For match fitness, experience, and comparing the levels of teams in different leagues.

melb knights under 21s coz it was a croation thing, sydney would play nsw teams because nsw teams r of a high standard unlike tasmanian soccer

Chuq said...

How would you know they are of a higher standard? I don't know the last time a Tas representative team has played a major NSL or A-League team, so how would you know?

Anonymous said...

yeah i agree chug, i think its more a thing of rating the standard of Tasmanian football because we really have no idea. people are always too quick to jump on the "it is just a rubbish league down here", "its not what it used to be". how do we know? its been so long!

Anonymous said...

I'd rather see a TAS team in the A-League than a NZ club. Just don't give the team an animal name, or "Knights". Everyone seems to be naming their club "Knights" these days...

Anonymous said...

well its not that hard to work out really, if u have watched aleauge or the vpl or the nsw premier leauge if u know anything about soccer its very easy to work out they are alot better than us, but chug i do wish we could get a aleauge team but i couldnt see it happening for a long time yet

whats the point of having a Tassie team with no tassie players? is it then not a aminland team playing under the name of tassie?

Chuq said...

1) How many players in the Central Coast team are actually from the Central Coast?

And ...

2) Whoever said there wouldn't be any Tassie players anyway?

Tassie team (not as strong as it could have been) played NSL champions (full strength) South Melbourne in 1999 at KGV. South Melbourne 5-1 winners (Harbo scored) they won it easy. They were going to play World Club championship a month after that and we had not started our league, so take from that what you want. A tassie team could easily play in the VPL, whether or not we have the guys to commit to such a thing is a completely different matter, they may have the skill, but some will not want to commit to training and travel.

true south melb were pretty close to full strength but made alot of subs and as practise game we all know we do not play at 100% where as tassie played at 120% as we it could be the onlt time ever to play opposition of this quality, i think the a leauge is of higher quality than the nsl to

why would u bother with getting a team in the a league unless you have tasmanian players in it??

Catman said...

It will take somebody with the guts and determination to set up an A- League side in Tasmania.
Fist $5 million is needed for the license that goes to the FFA.
Then a further $2 million is needed for player wages, Showgrounds in Hobart would be a perfect fit as a home base but will need to meet FFA standards which will cost anywhere from $1-5 million or look at other venues that can hold 10-15,000
First year is always the most expensive in set up costs if they can secure Tiger airways and another multi national who is looking for exposure in the asian market would make it a lot easier to sell the club to people and other corporates.

i have been told that there is already a planning commitee for a tasmanian A-league team, which has already come up with desciscions such as grounds, fundings, players etc. and will be making a proposal to ffa.

It is important to extrapolate the football scenario of the A league bid to the Tasmanian cricket scenario. If cricket can be successful, so can football, given the population base. Coaching and talent identification in cricket must be on a par with Australian best practice, so why can't football coaching be better?
It is not as if the rest of Australia has adopted world's best practice. Far from it. This is based on the premise that the A League team will essentially comprise Tasmanian players. At first it won't. Over time it may change. By Decentric
