alex holmes is of real promiss for the future from what i have seen. he is solid and reads the game very well. he needs a bit of bulk but that can be worked on in the future a great pick up for any premier league side i rekon

Anonymous said...

who is alex holmes, obviously he is not the best 1 of the better players in the state, who does he play 4

Anonymous said...

maybe an up and coming player for the future

Anonymous said...

alex?, ok what about players from the premier leauge who are already cemented into a senior team

Anonymous said...

well obviously theres good players in the state but if they are any good they should b getting out of the state and playing on the mainland

Anonymous said...

who says they have to leave the state? soccer isnt everything ... Everyone is of this view that if you are good you should go to the mainland, why?

Anonymous said...

well for starters the tassie leauge has got worse and worse for the last 5 years and i can not see it improving anytime soon and any person playing in tasmania will not get picked up by a bigger club

If a player has a desire to play as high as they possibly can then there is no choice, they MUST leave the state.
By the same token some players are happy playing in the Tassie leagues while still enjoying the lifestyle this wonderful state offers.
Both options are equally admirable. It just depends on your personal goal as a player.

Yep i would have to agree, in order to further their game they would have to go to the mainland to pursue that higher level. But no one has to do anything now do they! lol

Anonymous said...

yeh thats right but u look at the last few years there has been players starting to leave the state alot more than there used to be and doing well on the mainland

Anonymous said...

What has the export of players to the mainland been like over the years? Ive never really kept a big enough interest in it, has it increased? Did many used to go over in the past?

Anonymous said...

Well you couldnt go past the current Vic Tuting/George Dale medal winners now could you! lol

Is there a way of giving recognition to any player that leaves the state and succeeds. Our younger players need to see that there are pathways. The AFL kills us in the publicity stakes. What is the equivilent of the National Draft for the "A" League? When was the last Tasmanian selected for the Institute of Sport?

The young striker from Devonport was the last to go to the AIS. Foad Comandari, see here; http://www.ais.org.au/soccer/comandari.asp
As I remember, speed to burn.
There just isn't the publicity in football that there is in AFL but that's ok at the moment. Hopefully things will change over the coming years.

yes thats right plus there has also been about 4 or 5 players move to the mainland and playing there over the last 3 or 4 years would be interesting to c how they have progressed with better training and opposition

If people stated that a 16 year old is the best player in Tasmania,Football in Tasmania is in trouble. What about this good quality players Jonathan Ladic,
Saunders, Roach,Chris Sanita ,Ricky Self,Nathan Picthford, ect the league need more players like Brett Pullen David Stoddard,Colin Shepperd Clubs need to improve the standard at junior level and obtain good quality coaches.

Anonymous said...

exactly no 16 year old is the best in tasmania, sanders is no longer in tasmania as he plays in victoria and i think ladic is trialing with his club, sanita is going to nsw apparently and the others should trial as it would do them no harm on the mainland

To improve Football in Tasmania Clubs need to improve their coaching staff ,and send their coaches to coaching courses to improve they skills. Clubs spend money for senior coaching and tend to neglet they junior development ,give this young talent good quality coaches and you will see in years to come good Football in Tasmania !!!!!

Anonymous said...

A few clubs put a LOT of effort into junior/youth coaching. South Hobart, Clarence, Kingborough are reknown for their junior development. A few clubs identify good junior players then just offer the unholy $$$, that's another form of junior development. This is why the new FFT development programme has yet to be tested. What is going to stop some clubs just buying a Tas. rep squad?

Anonymous said...

I guess from past experiences, nothing at all has stopped some clubs from gaining state rep squads, especially the highest quality juniors, e.g. knights and south.

Anonymous said...

As always $$$ influences decisions but I do not think here in Tassie at Junior level we are talking $$$$????ridicolus!!!!
And regarding the club mentioned previously that puts lot of effort in to development it is correct!!!!! They do a very good job!!!!Junior that is TAS rep.....we are talking players that do represent Tasmania at the nationals. If I recall a meeting at FFT Headquarters it was mentioned that after Nationals players can return back to their original club

Anonymous said...

i must say yeh south hobart gets alot of state reps but would not buy them as they come through the junior ranks, as for knights i dont think u could name 1 player going to that club because he was a state rep and offered money

Anonymous said...

South Hobart have brazenly written to kids in Central teams to entice them to come to South Hobart (that's at U/12 and even younger). South Hobart have also use the Bega 'junket' to entice kids to South Hobart. So don't tell me there isn't subtle (and some not so subtle) pressure to recruit junior players.

Knights?? They don't have a junior development programme.

Anonymous said...

i do remember about 5 yrs back that one coach took a whole southern/state rep side from uni to knights

Anonymous said...

yeh thats right a team was taken from uni to knights but only for the under 21 leauge and not the senior competition

Anonymous said...

if we are talking about a coach which is taken the whole state team rep players to a club. What about a certain coach which was coaching the U16 state team and after the nationals he took the whole team to south hobart....??????????? and coach South hobart for 5 yrs after that !!!!the FFT now do not allowe this to happen.

we can go on on on who cares about the past we need to concentrate on the future and the development of our younger players, stop living in the past !!!!!!!!! if we have people that in the past have made mistakes so be it !!! we need to place Tasmania on the Australian football map.
This year our state reps did a teriffic job !!!!!! well done FFT keep at it !!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Who cares about the past?? Well, if you don't learn from the past you will make the same mistakes again and again. Which is precisly what FFT are doing now. Nothing they are doing is new, it's a case of been there done that.

The current system of development is designed to make FFT look good and NOTHING more. It's not about putting Tasmania on the map, it's about stopping ego's getting bruised at National Championships.

What is so wonderful about the rep teams from this year? They have been coerced into segregating themselves from their clubs (loss of identity) and their team mates (loss of friendship). They and their parents trapse about the state like a pack of migrating vagabonds throwing money out the car window as they go. Results?? Well in the role of developing players, results shouldn't be a yard stick but the coaching & development manager himself said that he wanted Tasmania to be ranked in the top four 'consistently' and this can only be measured by results.

Where did the Tassie teams rank?? 9th & 11th. No better than any previous season and in some cases much worse. This is not the fault of the kids, they have been fed a total 'package'. Unfortunately it's like getting clothes on Christmas morning for these kids. I would suspect they have lost far more than they have gained.

The sounds of dissention are already being heard from the kids (and their parents) about what an 'ego trip' it has all been.

Any way, I shall comment on this threads heading, Who I believe to be the best in the state, and as I can only really comment on the north I will do only that. Somerset have some of the better young guys licking a ball at present and could well spend a decade at the top of the Northern Comp if they keep it together, you could throw a blanket over 5 or 6 talented players there, Marty Wells is one of the best defenders going around in the north, As for midfeilder, surely no one would disagree that Des Schipper is the finest product of the north at present! Unfortunatly I dont believe the North has a striker worthy of best in the state at present so from what i have observed the great Dutchman Tom Huigsloot would rank! I have always been a fan of Goal Keepers and Between Shanon Rumble and MArshall Pooley you have two very talented keepers! nothing else stands out up here!

Anonymous said...

theres only bout 2 or 3 northern players max that would be in a state team

Anonymous said...

who are the past winners of the vic tuting and georg dale medals over the last 10 years or so, these must be some of our best I guess.

Strweth, there are thirty one comments under this heading and only two or three of them have mentioned the names of any players. My two cents worth -keeping in mind that I'm from up north.

I'll agree with Captain Oz that Des Schipper in the top two or three players up our way with his ability to turn a game with a little bit of magic. Others would include Peter Oosterloo from Riverside, new Burnie United signing Ben Crosswell - who is untouchable on his day and Ricki Eaves from Somerset who combines fantastic skills with an enormous work ethic.

If I had to choose one player to build a team around though it would be Todd Hingston, another Somerset player. While he's only eighteen years old he is one of the best defensive players I've seen and his reading of the game, ballwinning ability and distribution make him nightmare for opposition attackers. Played a huge role in keeping Somerset's goals against down to 10 in season 2006.

Look at some of the younger boys that have left,Chris Sanita looks as if he is on the move, Troy kaden has been on trial to a former EPL club in WBA, James sherman has been in victoria for a year now already, all these kids are just that kids, 17. Sanders as well is proving to be more than he showed while in tas.

Anonymous said...

Lets not forget Matty Hill!!! Left home at a young age to go international and play/train in brazil thats not small.

Anonymous said...

would be good to see the improvement of these players who have left, wich players have got contracts on the mainland for the coming season, a lot have trialled but who have been good enough to actaully make it

Anonymous said...

Sanders has signed a new contract at gully, sherman is at bulleen zebras, same club harbinson was formaly at, sanita has been offered a contract and will sign within the next 3 weeks.

Wouldnt have a clue of their development, you would think there would be some with the step up.

What about all the ones who are lost to other sports? eg: Sam Croswell (Ben's little bro') and Hamish Peacock are now athletics superstars.

Anonymous said...

superstar metro recruit corey "lether jacket" smith is easily the best player in the state, great on both feet, disciplined, outstanding leader, no social life outside of soccer as hes a commited player to the metro soccer club, wot a LEGEND

im telling you now, a fit chris mckenna is the best player to come out of the north in the last 10 years. struggled with injury for 3 years but still consitantly leads the goals tally playing half seasons. Same thing can be said for Alan Eadie from devonport. struggled with injury for 2 or 3 years but before that he and mckenna were clearly the top 2 strikers in the north. And a partnership that scored plenty of goals and helped d'port to 3 straight titles and 2 state championships.

Ricky Eaves top quality.
Des Schipper good player, not sure he's in the top 3 like stated.

Crosswell is certainly close to the top and also agree with todd hingston comments made earlier. he can play! Same goes for simon wilson of devonport!

as for keepers, shannon rumble is a good shot stopper, but lets be honest anyside that gets beaten 10 nil is going to have a busy keeper who gets plenty of chances to shine. i prefer Western Knights keeper innis (dont ask me to spell his first name). Marshall Pooley is also a good keeper and his brother rohan an underated defender / midfielder.

I think possibly last years northern rep team has some southeners underating our players up here. the fact is only 2 or 3 of the northern team could be garunteed a start in our best lineup.

I'd be interested to see Foad Comandari and how much he's developed in the last 3 or 4 years. had potential written all over him but only came of the bench at devonport most times I watched them! very individual but looked to have all the tools!

Anonymous said...

i think you ciould just about make a starting 11 out of the notrhern leauge for a tassie team.they would be marshall pooley or adam hoare in goals.defence of todd hingston, marty wells and shaq from devonport.middfeild from left wing, mark ambrose pete oosterloo, chris considine and jeremy de bomford and up front des shipper ben crosswell and sam cocks.try and beat that team.
