Summer Cup

Do you think the Summer Cup should be scrapped in place of maybe 3 extra games for the season propper? Clubs can then play warm-up/friendlies against whoever they choose. Some clubs feel that the Summer Cup is a waste of their time and does not help prepare them for the coming season.

The summer cup can be a bit lengthy at times, and alot of teams dont take it that serious. But i guess its up to those teams what they want to do, they dont have to take it seriously. It can be good for coaches and players to get ready for the coming season. Maybe they should consider a knockout structure instead of a round robin one??

Sorry Brian, im guessing this is what you meant in your earlier post re: some concerns about the summer cup format?

I think its a great idea to give those aspiring Div 1 teams the oppurunity to play against teams at a higher level in the Summer Cup. Was this the original plan when it was first initiated?

Doesn't the Statewide Lakoseljac Cup offer this opportunity? Personally, I don't think the preseason tournament is the best platform to test a Div. 1 team's mettle (against Premier teams) simply because most clubs are understrength in this tournament.

Surely it cant harm the Div 1 teams though to have more games against the Premier League sides, whether they are serious or not? I do agree with you though Blackjack, the Statewide Cup offers this on a different level and its taken more seriously. Its a tough call either way and i guess it needs to be discussed between the clubs.

Do you mean bring back the semi-finals and finals for the end of season?? What do u mean by play the Premier League on Friday and Sunday??

Sorry Jonesy, if i didn't explain well enough 4 you. In years gone by Premier League Summer cup was split into 2 divisions with 3 night games on Friday night and other game on Sunday played amongst Premier League Reserve games.
Then top two from each group would play off top group a v 2 group b and vice versa top b v 2nd a , two winners play off in Grand Final.

Semi's were nearly always better games than final and were also 45 min each way again good prep for season.

As to a Final series , that is another story, course we should have one in Prem- Prem res - Div 1 at least. send off

I would like to see an open summer Cup to the whole Premier league and 1 st division teams participating ,also a quality junior tournament type of youth nationals.
A State Senior Premier League and a Youth premier League so we can improve our Junior development.

Hudson Cup is the format in the North and it seem to work well, Its orginised practise matches if nothing else with Insurance, Refs and all that catered for, sure it costs to get in and enter but there is a prize at the end and it gives a great op for the coaches to look at last years unders that might be ready to challenge the players for a position, also you might even test the odd last season under 16 or 17 to see if they might be a player in the wings! May have a few new comers to look at and this gives you every chance while maintaining some form of pressure to perform! Only one team in Launceston dosent participate and thats cause they hav issues with it, but thats there call, be good to see some NW sides inb it this year!

A number of southern teams have won the Hudson Cup. When Knights were under Morton, he took them up there as a regular part of their preseason
